CURRENT PROJECTS (2020-2021):

Project: DEESHA Partnership – Distribution of school supplies to Cosmos High School, Borivali, Mumbai, India

Project Team: Shivani Mudhol, Archit Wankhade

Grateful thanks to Manjusha Joshi, Ph.D., the Founder of DEESHA Trust, Mumbai, India

Project Description: The Sunnyvale Youth Chapter of Chirag reached out to the DEESHA Trust, a registered non-profit based in Mumbai, India to work out a series of projects.  The first was to fund-raise and distribute school supplies to the students of the Cosmos High School, Borivali, Mumbai, India.

Project Status: This project has been successfully completed in August 2021.  Shivani and Archit worked with the DEESHA Trust team to identify the school(s), procure the list of necessary school supplies, come up with the target budget, raise funds, transfer the amount, work with the suppliers to ship the items directly to the school and then distribute to the students.

The following three videos provide a glimpse of the significance of this project, particularly in pandemic times (kindly note that the DEESHA Trust has been mislabeled as DISHA Foundation):

Project Description: Chirag Foundation started its GoFundMe campaign for Covid-19 support to India in early 2020 but this gathered momentum in early 2021 when the Wave2 impacted India in a big way.

Project: Tuition and Supplies Drive, Sri Aurobindo Society

Project Lead: Shivani Mudhol

Project Team: Shivani Mudhol, Archit Wankhade, Raagni Krishna Devaki

Project Partner Organization: Sri Aurobindo Society, Dharwad, Karnataka, India.  Local Coordinator: Sri Harish Amur

Project Context: The Dharwad branch of Sri Aurobindo Society was started in 1991 and follows the ideals of the parent organization Sri Aurobindo Society, Puducherry.  It started Sri Aurobindo School in 2001 in Dharwad to assist the underprivileged sections of the city. The school building and the tuition fees were paid through donations raised by the organizations. Kurtkoti Memorial Trust (KMT), a local philanthropic organization supported this effort. In 2015, stricter Government regulations forced the school to close down the operation and relocate the children to other local schools, supporting them till 2018. In 2019, KMT got CSR funding from the Faiveley Corporation, Hosur. This worked for some time but when the key person behind this project in KMT passed away, KMT had to withdraw its support. In 2020, Faiveley Corporation stopped its CSR support owing to Covid closures and losses.

Project Description: Sunnyvale Chapter team targets fundraising for 75 underprivileged students to reduce their burden, and more importantly to encourage school-going on a regular basis. So, the payment of the tuition directly to the school was subject to regular attendance by each student.

Project Targets:
Phase 1: Tuition Drive: $500   [Sep 2020 – Dec 2020]
Phase 2: Supplies Drive: $500   [Oct 2020 – Dec 2020]

Project Status: Owing to the Covid situation in both the US and India, working with the Sri Aurobindo Society, this project is put on hold.
